Most EMS-attended OHCA not transported in Taiwan
Factors associated with hospital transport in emergency medical services-attended out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
Resuscitation · Added 12 May 2026
Retrospective cohort of 3339 OHCA patients found 68.9% were not transported, with transport more likely in witnessed arrests, bystander CPR, hypertension, and shorter time from last known normal, and less likely with older age, malignancy, prior stroke, and arrests at home.
- Study type
- Registry
- Design
- Retrospective population-based cohort
- Participants
- 3,339 EMS-attended non-traumatic adult OHCA (Taiwan)
- Main finding
- 68.9% were non-transported; transport was associated with witnessed arrest (aOR 1.754), bystander CPR (aOR 2.191), shorter/unknown last known normal (<2 h aOR 7.073), and inversely with age, malignancy, prior stroke and arrest at home; decision-maker–patient sex dyads also influenced transport odds.
- Caveat
- Single Taiwanese jurisdiction; transport decisions may not generalise to other systems
- Bottom line
- Context only
Learning goal
Understand the clinical and contextual factors that shape transport decisions in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
