Paediatric OHCA survival falls after ~15 min CPR
Duration of Emergency Medical Services-Initiated Prehospital Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Efforts and Survival for Pediatric Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest
Resuscitation · Added 14 May 2026
This nationwide cohort study examined whether longer prehospital CPR duration affects survival in paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, finding that prolonged CPR efforts can still yield favourable neurological outcomes in selected patients.
- Study type
- Registry
- Design
- Retrospective cohort from a US/Canada resuscitation registry
- Participants
- 1,313 children with non-traumatic OHCA
- Main finding
- 236 (18.0%) had prehospital ROSC; 136 (10.4%) survived to discharge. Probability of survival during ongoing EMS CPR was 7.9% at 1 min, <1% at 14.8 min, and the upper 95% CI fell below 1% at 22.0 min.
- Caveat
- Retrospective North American registry data from 2011–2015; survival probabilities are population-level, not individual predictors.
- Bottom line
- Context only
Learning goal
Weigh when to continue versus cease prehospital resuscitation in paediatric cardiac arrest, considering rare survival beyond prolonged efforts.

Most EMS-attended OHCA not transported in Taiwan
Retrospective cohort of 3339 OHCA patients found 68.9% were not transported, with transport more likely in witnessed arrests, bystander CPR, hypertension, and shorter time from last known normal, and less likely with older age, malignancy, prior stroke, and arrests at home.

Forehead EEG feasible in postanoxic coma
Comparison of forehead EEG electrodes versus conventional EEG in 51 postanoxic coma patients found forehead recordings were interpretable in 74.1% of cases with moderate agreement, suggesting potential as a screening tool to reduce technician workload.
