Timing of out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest

Timing and outcomes of out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest: results of a multicentre, retrospective cohort study
Resuscitation Plus · Added 27 July 2026

Nine out of ten out-of-hospital TCAs occur before EMS arrival.

Study type
Cohort
Design
Multicentre retrospective observational cohort (nationwide HEMS)
Participants
1,532 patients with out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest
Main finding
90.2% sustained TCA before EMS arrival, 8.2% after EMS arrival and 1.6% during HEMS transport; sustained ROSC occurred in 20.8%, 47.2% and 92.0% respectively; meaningful survival achievable regardless of TCA onset
Caveat
Retrospective design; HEMS-attended patients only, limiting generalisability to routine ambulance responses
Bottom line
Supports current practice

Learning goal
